Genotypic variation for a quantitative character maintained under stabilizing selection without mutations: epistasis.

چکیده

A model of the gene action on a quantitative character is suggested. The model takes into account epistasis by combining multiplicative with the traditional additive approximation of the action of loci. It is demonstrated on the basis of this model that a high level of genotypic variation can be maintained in a population for a quantitative character under stabilizing selection in the absence of mutations, if there is epistasis. It is also shown that a large amount of additive variation as well as high heritability can be "hidden" in such a population and "released" if stabilizing selection is relaxed.

Additive Variation Maintained under Stabilizing for Two Quantitative Characters Selection: a Two-locus Model of Pleiotropy

A model with two diallelic loci controlling two additive quantitative characters is suggested. One of the loci has a similar effect on both characters, whereas the second locus has an antagonistic effect on the two characters. Both characters experience direct stabilizing selection. The model yields a stable polymorphic state, with both characters maintaining genetic variation. The genetic corr...

Pleiotropic models of polygenic variation, stabilizing selection, and epistasis.

We show that in polymorphic populations many polygenic traits pleiotropically related to fitness are expected to be under apparent "stabilizing selection" independently of the real selection acting on the population. This occurs, for example, if the genetic system is at a stable polymorphic equilibrium determined by selection and the nonadditive contributions of the loci to the trait value eith...

Genetic variation maintained in multilocus models of additive quantitative traits under stabilizing selection.

Stabilizing selection for an intermediate optimum is generally considered to deplete genetic variation in quantitative traits. However, conflicting results from various types of models have been obtained. While classical analyses assuming a large number of independent additive loci with individually small effects indicated that no genetic variation is preserved under stabilizing selection, seve...

Joint effects of pleiotropic selection and stabilizing selection on the maintenance of quantitative genetic variation at mutation-selection balance.

In quantitative genetics, there are two basic "conflicting" observations: abundant polygenic variation and strong stabilizing selection that should rapidly deplete that variation. This conflict, although having attracted much theoretical attention, still stands open. Two classes of model have been proposed: real stabilizing selection directly on the metric trait under study and apparent stabili...
